Navigating caretaking is entering an experience you’ve never felt before. Taking care of someone who has taken care of you can feel uncomfortable, and out of sorts. However, just by reading this blog and doing research for your loved one, you are on the right track. We want to help you shape their lifestyle with some helpful ways to keep them healthy and on the right track. Here is Geri Fashions’s Senior’s Guide to Staying Healthy Year-Round.
Eating a healthy diet
Because the digestive system slows down with age, it is necessary to incorporate important vitamins and high-fiber foods into your loved one's diet, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A common cause of poor senior nutrition is a lack of appetite. There could be several reasons for this, but researchers concluded that simply improving the "mealtime ambiance" and "enhancing the flavour of food" can do wonders for a senior's appetite. Three ways to combat this problem include: promoting shared mealtimes with friends and family, presenting visually appealing food, and recommending a regular meal, snack, and beverage schedule.
Taking supplements as necessary
Some supplements can help maintain a healthy immune system. Always consult your doctor before providing your family member a supplement, especially if they are taking a prescription medication. Calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 are some supplements the doctor may recommend.
Getting active
Physical activity, in addition to alleviating depression, can improve seniors' energy levels, memory, and sleep. But which exercises are best for seniors? Aerobic, balance, strength training, and other low-impact exercises should be prioritized for healthy seniors. Talk with a healthcare professional to determine what type of exercise program is best for a senior's needs.
Learning to manage stress
Increased stress can disrupt bodily functions, including your loved one’s immune system. You can reduce their stress by introducing a balance of physical activity, getting enough sleep, and relaxing.
Getting plenty of rest
Sleep not only reduces stress but also allows your body to repair itself. As a result, getting enough sleep can result in a stronger immune system in your senior family member, making it easier for their body to fight viruses. Sleep is also important as they age because it helps with memory and concentration. Ideally, have them sleep for at least seven and a half to nine hours per night. If they are having difficulty sleeping, consult their doctor to determine the underlying cause.
