5 Tips to Help Your Loved One Embrace Adaptive Clothing

Transitioning your loved one to adaptive clothing can sometimes be met with resistance or uncertainty. The fear of losing independence is often strong in older adults and they may be scared to lose their freedom or feel reliant on others.

The truth is, adaptive clothing can be stylish, comfortable and most importantly improve their quality of life.

If you’re helping a loved one embrace adaptive clothing, here are some thoughtful steps to guide the process and make it a positive experience.

1. Start with a Conversation

Before diving into new clothing options, have an empathetic conversation with your loved one to discuss their current challenges with dressing. Explain to them how adaptive clothing can help with their day-to-day tasks and listen to their concerns and preferences. You don't even have to use words like 'adaptive' or 'special'.

2. Highlight the Similarities

Geri Fashion's items are stylish with the adaptive aspect being very subtle. We also carry a variety of colour options and styles like- dresses, polos, tops, skirts so your loved one can still have a complete wardrobe!

3. Involve them in the Selection Process

Let your loved one try on different styles and fabrics to find what they like best. When they have a say in their wardrobe, they're more likely to feel comfortable and satisfied with their new items. They may even have their own personal style that they can show off with their new pieces!

4. Introduce Gradually

Start with a few pieces rather than overhauling their entire wardrobe at once. Gradually introducing adaptive clothing can help your loved one adjust to the new styles without feeling overwhelmed. Shop adaptive pants in colours that go with everything, and basic tops, cardigans and undergarments. They may be more willing to adjust to the new wardrobe, after a positive experience with something they’re trying out.

5. Demonstrate the Clothing and Offer Support

Sometimes, showing how adaptive clothing works can make a big difference. Demonstrate how easy it is to use features like snap closures or open-back pants. Offer ongoing assistance and encouragement as they practice using these features to help build their confidence.
